Before you
sit down.

The questions most people ask before they begin. What Useful is and isn't. What a session looks like. What we keep. What Free and Pro unlock. Honest answers, in plain language.

What Useful is.

Two sides of the same sentence — so there are no surprises on either end.

What Useful Is
  • A conversation guided by questions, not answers.
  • A space to notice what's underneath the surface question.
  • A framework of four stages — Awareness, Reason, Need, Aligned Action — followed in sequence.
  • A guide who waits for your answer, then asks the next question.
  • A written reflection saved at the end of every completed session.

Useful is built on the conviction that you are the authority on your own life.

What Useful Isn't
  • Advice. We never tell you what to do.
  • Therapy, counseling, or a clinical service.
  • A replacement for professional support when you need it.
  • A productivity tool, journal, or generic AI chat.
  • A claim to know you better than you know yourself.

If you need urgent help, please reach out to a qualified person. Useful isn't built for that, and we won't pretend it is.

What happens when you sit down.

One session, one guide, four stages — in order. The framework is the same for Free and Pro; the difference is how often you return.

01
Awareness

Your guide opens by asking you to notice — what's happening in your body, what you've been telling yourself, what you sense but haven't said out loud. No theories. Just observation.

02
Reason

Once you've named what's there, your guide asks what actually happened. What assumptions are you carrying? What's yours to understand — and what isn't?

03
Need

Underneath the surface question there's usually a need — not what you've been told you need, what you actually need. The guide asks one question at a time until you meet it.

Three things, on purpose.

We store less than most apps. Here's exactly what gets written, when, and why — three things on purpose.

Sessions

Each completed session stores the topic you chose, every turn of the dialogue with your Useful Guide, the moment you finished, and a short reflection written at the close. Free and Pro both store the same single-session shape — the difference is whether subsequent sessions happen.

Theme Tags

When a session completes, we quietly note the underlying pattern that surfaced — drawn from a small, fixed vocabulary of five: relationship, work, self-trust, decision, identity. The list is closed and stable, by design, so the same pattern gets the same name the next time. You can see your own tags on each session. Tags are only written on completion; in-progress or abandoned sessions have none.

Weekly Practice Notes

Pro subscribers also have a weekly self-trust practice — one short note a week about how you showed up. Free accounts don't use this surface, and nothing is written for them here. Each note is keyed to the week you wrote it; updating the same week's note overwrites the older one rather than stacking a second row.

What each one unlocks.

The framework is the same on both. The difference is how often you return, and what follows you between sessions.

Yours to manage, when you want.

Subscriptions are managed by you, directly. When you signed up, you received a billing email with a manage subscription link — pause, change, or cancel from there at any time. There's no in-app cancel button, and we won't ask you to call one in to keep your account.

If you cancel, your access continues through the end of the billing period you've already paid for. After that, you can still return any time — start fresh, or pick up where you left off.

I'm in the middle of a life change. Can Useful help?

Yes — and the framework was built with this in mind. Career shifts, becoming a parent, a move across the country, an ending that wasn't chosen: each one is a moment where the ground under your assumptions shifts, and the old answers stop fitting. Useful doesn't tell you what the new shape should be. It walks you through noticing what you've been carrying, what you've outgrown, and what actually matters now — one question at a time, in order.

You pick a topic — anything from the list that fits, including a custom one — and the guide meets you there. The four stages (Awareness, Reason, Need, Aligned Action) hold steady even when everything else doesn't. By the close of one session you'll have a written reflection you can return to. For longer transitions, Pro users come back weekly and watch the pattern unfold across sessions.

I'm trying to find direction. Is this for me?

It can be — if you're willing to be asked questions rather than handed answers. Useful won't tell you what your purpose is. That's not modesty; it's the design. Purpose isn't a sentence you find once and carry; it's something you keep noticing, testing, and adjusting as your life changes. The framework is built for that — for the user who has a vague sense that something wants shifting, but no clean way to put words to it yet.

Start with a topic that sounds closest — even if it's a rough fit — and let the guide work down to what's underneath. Many people who come in on decision or self-doubt end the session with something closer to a reorientation than a resolution. That's the work. One session, in order, and a written reflection at the end. If direction is what you're looking for, you'll know by the close whether Useful is a place to keep coming back.
